Under the direction of the school principal, serves as an aide to certificated personnel in the supervision, care and instruction of physically, emotionally and educationally handicapped students; and relieves the teacher, or other certificated supervisor, of clerical details.
REPRESENTATIVE

DUTIES

Assists teachers in conducting lessons and other classroom activities. Works with students in small groups, or on a one-to-one basis to reinforce basic skills or to supplement classroom work. Prepares for, and assists with various classroom projects. Operates audio-visual equipment. Assists in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials. Prepares and maintains records. Assists in ordering and caring for classroom equipment and supplies. Confers, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the needs of students. Administers and grades various types of tests. Performs a wide variety of clerical and typing duties. May perform the following duties if working with handicapped children: works with wheelchairs and other equipment for physically handicapped children; helps children in the bathroom and cleans up bathroom accidents; serves lunches; changes diapers; loads and unloads buses; puts on and removes prosthesis. Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Correct English usage, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation and arithmetic; general classroom procedures and equipment; methods and attitudes required in working with students who have special educational needs. Ability to assist with instructional activities in a classroom; learn the procedures, functions, limitation of assigned Special

Assistant duties; understand the needs of physically, emotionally and educationally handicapped students; remain calm in situations of stress; perform routine clerical duties; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with teachers, students and others contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school, supplemented by training and/or experience working with children in a learning situation. Training and/or experience in working with handicapped children is desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Classroom environment; may be required to accompany students on field trips, must be able to lift and physically restrain students at times.
